Ref. 84 Tuning hammers
For the smaller sizes of tuning pin, there are two shaft
lengths;
for piano sizes, just one. The standard handle length is used for the
standard shaft, and a shorter handle matches the shorter shaft. Handles
to offset the shafts are available; these have two advantages over the
normal type, firstly giving the control of a lever without the risk of
pin-bending, and secondly, tuning near an open lid in the treble of
virginals and square pianos and the bass of spinets, where the lid
restricts space, becomes much easier.
The handles are usually Rio Rosewood, although other
hard dense timbers are sometimes used. The strikers and the shafts are
cast bronze, only marginally softer than the tuning pins.
The shafts have slots tapering in both directions in
sizes to suit a large range of tuning pins. See the order form for full details:
